"Farge’s work is an eloquent testimony to the materiality of the archive and its power to astonish and delight."-Arnold Hunt, TLS At once a practical guide to research methodology and an elegant literary reflection on the challenges of writing history, this uniquely rich volume demonstrates how surrendering to the archive’s allure can forever change how we understand the past. Originally published in 1989, Farge’s classic work communicates the tactile, interpretive, and emotional experience of archival research while sharing astonishing details about life under the Old Regime in France. In The Allure of the Archives, she conveys the exhilaration of uncovering hidden secrets and the thrill of venturing into new dimensions of the past. She was seduced by the sensuality of old manuscripts and by the revelatory power of voices otherwise lost. While combing through two-hundred-year-old judicial records from the Archives of the Bastille, historian Farge was struck by the extraordinarily intimate portrayal they provided of the lives of the poor in pre-Revolutionary France, especially women. Arlette Farge’s Le Goût de l’archive is widely regarded as a historiographical classic. An exquisite appreciation of the distinctive rewards of historical research and a classic guide to the personal yet disciplined craft of discovery, now in its first English translation.

He has some very interesting things to say about privilege and his realisation of him having it as a white, American man living in Ecuador. If I am going to write this review, I would like to start by focusing on the themes which were developed and woven into the ‘story’ (if I can call it that) so well. I have been trying to read more books set in or focusing on Latin America, and with this one being set across Ecuador, the US and some other Latin American countries he visits, this helped me on that journey. In the end I actually chose to read non-fiction! And I am so glad that I did, because Dennehy has had a very interesting life, this one almost read like fiction, and I learned so so much. When I first read the synopsis for this book, I mistakenly thought it fiction. That KID can change everything in your life. It’s a bit supernatural, so prepare to be mind-fucked. So many people on Goodreads told me that it was an amazing read. I originally thought it would be a contemporary horror that got me shivering uncontrollably. If I don’t talk about spoilers in this review, I don’t know what else I can talk about since it’s a short story. Spoilers ahead! Of course you can see it coming. This is a short story with only about 60 pages, but sadly, I didn’t enjoy reading it. Some might say that such leniency is starting to take its toll on the father, given how his health has declined. Some might say he spoils his son by allowing him to set his own bedtimes and eat candy whenever he wants. Some might say the father is a little too accommodating given the lack of discipline when the child loses his temper in public. They take walks in the park together, visit county fairs, museums, and zoos, and eat together overlooking the lake. Synopsis: At first glance, Phil Pendleton and his son Adam are just an ordinary father and son, no different from any other. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Jezebel lesley hazletonIn this remarkable new biography, Lesley Hazleton shows exactly how the proud and courageous queen of Israel was vilified and made into the very embodiment of wanton wickedness by her political and religious enemies. But what if this version of her story, handed down to us through the ages, is merely the one her enemies wanted us to believe? What if Jezebel, far from being a conniving harlot, was, in fact, framed? Her name alone speaks of sexual decadence and promiscuity. There is no woman with a worse reputation than Jezebel, the ancient queen who corrupted a nation and met one of the most gruesome fates in the Bible. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Amelia bedelia play ballBooks at this level, like Frog and Toad Are Friends include more complex story lines, longer sentences, and more challenging words.
